Out in Africa: our charitable project

Out in Africa is involved in the Khanyisela Project in the northern Drakensberg Mountains.  We know this area extremely well. Ross lived and used to guide in this area and we lived there when our kids were little and we helped build Montusi Mountain Lodge.

Khanysela is a broad ranging, well run project, frequently visited by us. The overall aim is to promote better education of the younger children in this beautiful but remote and disadvantaged part of Africa. Although government education is available and can be good, schools in this area are badly equipped and teaching levels are sub standard. Furthermore, children who only start Primary School at age 5-6 are usually behind national levels due to lack of stimulation at home, good creches, playschools, kindergartens, etc. and they rarely catch up. Thus the cycle of poverty and hardship repeats itself.

We help many local creches and schools with training, building, teaching materials, meals, etc. We have also founded a small private school for local hotel children and sponsored children from Zulu villages around us. This is a special little school with about 50 children and 3 teachers (other schools in the area have up to 90 children in one class... ). Not surprisingly, the children in this school do  perform and the first Zulu kids have now gone to good high schools on bursaries. If you wish to donate, great! Your money will go far since there are no overheads.  Please contact us for bank details - Siyabonga Khula!
