Description

In the north-east of the Serengeti, in the Lobo Hills. The Wildlife Lodges are among the oldest lodges built by the state a long time ago. Building styles then were very different from now, with a preference for big hotels - this has about 75 rooms. From a distance it looks more like a school or small hospital, with several floors and different wings. Over the years the Wildlife Lodges got quite a reputation for their poor service. But all that has changed now. And working within the constraints of the building (which architecturally speaking cannot be changed), much has been renovated. There is new management and the staff have clearly been better trained. The Wildlife Lodges have always all had one thing in their favour and this is the main reason they remain a favourite of Out in Africa: they are found in the best locations in the National Parks – and of the various Wildlife Lodges, Lobo has probably the best location, perhaps even one of the best views in the whole of East Africa. High up on the rocks it has spectacular views over the plains!! The migration normally passes through this area around November (depending on the rains) but because of the mixed acacia and grassland there is plenty game in the area all year round. Even the swimming pool built amongst the rocks (so no diving), looks out over the plains and the rooms have huge windows (with mosquito netting), so game watching is also possible from your own bed. There are often old buffalo bulls around the lodge using the rocky outcrop as cover against predators. The central areas of the lodge (restaurant, bar, lounge) are spacious, with high roofs, and built partly around the trees and rocks. There are Arabic influences in the choice of furniture (Lobo is also popular with guests from East Africa itself). Notice the tall glass pillar in the middle of the restaurant built around a tree. After the lodge had been completed a leopard (which had understandably fled during the construction phase and had not been seen for months) suddenly decided to return to this, his favourite tree… In all haste the tree was thus enclosed in glass casing. The bedrooms are reached via long open passages. They are not all that spacious but everything fits: good beds, chair, dressing table, closet, small bathroom with shower over the bath, washbasin and toilet. And the big windows for the view. There are some interleading rooms for families (there is no space in the rooms for a third bed).
