Description

Well known lodge situated on the south-western edge of the Serengeti ecosystem, in the great plains just outside the official park boundary. There are no fences and the animals are certainly not aware of the administrative boundaries… Ndutu has 32 rooms (each with its own deck) and is a good alternative for the either very expensive or very big and busy lodges in the central Seronera area of the park itself. It is one of the oldest lodges in the area, down-to-earth and not particularly luxury, no swimming pool, but with an authentic safari feel. It is popular with filmmakers and biologists, amongst them, Hugo von Lawick, who stayed here for years and is also buried here. Because there are several types of natural habitat nearby, there is a great variety of game in the immediate vicinity. Furthermore bush walks with an armed ranger are allowed (not permitted in the park itself). The lodge is busy between December and April. From December the wildebeest start to gather in the area, with February being the normal calving season (but all dependent on the rainfall). There are periods when the whole lodge is surrounded by the migration. But even outside these months there is enough game to be found at the water-holes and in the swamps around about.
