Description

This personable camp lies a few kilometres outside Lake Manyara National Park, a short distance from the village of Mto wa Mbu. If you are lucky enough to arrive when the sun is shining (nearly always in Tanzania), you are sure like us to be struck by the beautiful trees and shrubs. Migunga is situated in 4 hectares of luxurious foliage, with birds and insects flying through the filtered sunlight.  Migunga is the kiSwahili word for the yellow bark acacia, also known as the Fever Tree in Southern Africa, and the trees really are beautiful. It is a real “camp” in the sense that it is built in a big circle, with the main building in the centre, spacious and open, with restaurant and bar, and the 20 fixed tents spread out around it. These are the classic safari tents, big structures built on platforms, roomy inside, with good shower, wash basin and toilet attached  (and closed off with netting and canvas). In the tents there is 12V electricity, generated by sun panels. You can rest and simply enjoy your surroundings sitting on your deck. Or you can walk between the trees to the main deck or one of the seating areas created in the garden (there is a camp fire too). The staff come from many different areas of Tanzania and it is worth starting a conversation with them to learn more about this ethnically complex land. If you are interested and have the time there are various activities that can be arranged locally (not included), eg. a night drive to look for smaller nocturnal animals or a cycle trip.
