Description

This lodge is home to the famous Africat Foundation, which since 1992 has been promoting the welfare of the big carnivores of Namibia: lion, leopard, cheetah, brown hyena, and the African wild dog. Leopard and cheetah particularly are often still found in the wild in Namibia and relations with local farmers battling to keep their flocks alive in this arid land are strained. The foundation initially concentrated on taking in and caring for captured animals. Their activities have since expanded to include full rehabilitation (i.e. handling/training the animals in such a way that they can be released into the wild again), research, educating, as well as campaigning for better treatment of these magnificent animals by local farmers. The cheetahs in the rehabilitation programme are fitted with radio transmitters. Animals that cannot be reintroduced into the wild live on the estate and some even near the lodge (these do not have transmitters).

Okonjima Lodge consists of Main Camp, Bush Camp, Bush Suite and the exclusive campsite Omboroko. More information about the Camps in your tailor-made proposal.

All the lodges have a number of guided excursions available. The best known excursion is of course to the Africat Foundation to hear about the organisation’s work and visit the enclosures where the cheetahs live after they have been taken in. The animals are used to jeeps so approach up close, allowing for great photos. Besides a visit to the cheetahs there is also leopard tracking. A number of leopards in the area have been fitted with radio transmitters and can be tracked with a receiver. But this does not mean that one always gets to see a leopard as they tend to hide in dense, impenetrable bush - but it is certainly worth the adventure. After dinner there is also a short excursion to a hide near Bush Camp. Here the left-over food is thrown out and this often attracts shy nocturnal animals such as porcupines and the indomitable honey badger. Finally there is also the “Bushman Trail”, a guided walk which offers the opportunity to learn more about the traditions of the San (Bushmen), the oldest human inhabitants of this part of Africa.
